The Blogger Cooler

You know, like the conversations around your office water cooler? Only, the conversations will be with cooler people. And you don't have to be afraid of your boss listening to your conversation. And, you can say anything you want during your conversation. Okay, so I guess it's nothing like the conversations around your office water cooler. Just leave a comment, dammit!

For Shame, Supreme Court!!

The liberal justices of the US Supreme Court have just issued a ruiling which basically allows the rich to bribe your local legislature into taking your property.

So, the question is...

What country should I move to? Canada? Britain? I hear Australia is nice...

-------- Update 6/29/05

Sweet justice.

Okay, that is the biggest oxymoron I have ever read. What liberal judges? They are no liberal judges on US Supreme Court. It's run by fascists.

The closest one to a liberal is a centrist republican by the name of David Souter. The judges political spectrum ranges from moderate (Souter, Ginsberg, John Paul Stevens) to extreme fascism (Scalia, Thomas). And I don't think liberals have any motive helping the rich, because they tend to vote conservatively.

And if you want to get away from liberals, I'm sorry to say that Canada, the UK and Australia has more per capita than the US. They all have socialized Medicine, for one, which the conservatives of this country equate with communism.

..or did you mean to say the conservative judges of the US Supreme court?

Okay, calm down Patrick.

I am a "liberal." Which is why I was shocked and appalled that the justices who are commonly referred to as liberal (Souter, Ginsberg, Stevens, Breyer) were the ones who voted to allow the government to seize your property to any rich developer who comes along. It was Thomas, Scalia, Renquist, and O'Conner who actually DISSENTED on this opinion. So, it would seem that the liberals this time did help the rich.

And, yes, hell has frozen over.

BTW, I would appreciate government sponsored health care.

So, where should I move- Canada, Britain, Australia?

Oh, dear lord, you're right. Hell has frozen over, and it's getting mighty cold...

Okay, one of two things has happened here. Either the conservative justices have all of a sudden developed empathy (fat chance in hell), or they are hiding something evil. Honestly, there is no way in heck those neo-con judges would dissent unless the wording in the verdict (is that the right word?) didn't contain enough cruelty.

Now the moderates (okay, call them liberals, if you must) voting to agree on this is mindboggling. Supreme Court justices aren't elected, so election time politics would be out of place here. Hmmm...

As for moving out of the country... If you are looking for a place that is English-speaking, might I suggest Ireland. Only because they have one of the best economies in the EU, plus it's English-speaking. Canada is too close geographically to the US (and with the Torries gaining speed in parliament, it might be too close politically); The UK is too polluted and too much of a classist society, from what I hear. I don't know much about Australia, other than the political landscape sort of mirrors the US as the left-leaning parts are on the coasts, with the exception of Brisbane, which is sort of like our Houston/Dallas politcally. Melbourne was recently named one of the best places to live in the world, as was Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Sorry to sound pissed-off earlier.

Yea, I don't get it either!! There are things in this world that I count on. My ability to predict the Supreme Court's actions so I won't be surprised and dissapointed is one of them. If the so-called liberal judges, are now siding with the rich, land developers, then I don't know anything anymore!

I've evidently stayed here to long. It's time to move.

Ireland, huh? I know someone that lives there. That seems like a nice country. Smoke free too. ;) Now, I just gotta find a job there...

BTW, I forgive you for sounding pissed off earlier (isn't that big of me? ;). I realize that you thought I had slipped into a Bill O'Riley moment. I would have ripped me too if I thought that. But, alas, it was really opposite day and so-called liberal judges became our enemy. ;)

The court is harder and harder to predict.

(And, don't leave--we need people here to change things to how they ought to be.)

Choose Australia. You have a choice of extremely hot, warm or *#&&^$^& cold climates (depending on your preference) and our Election campaigns aren't 4 years in the making. They go for about a month and have a media ban. You either vote Labour or Liberal, and whoever has the least fat candidate wins :) Plus we have bbq's and beach parties at Christmas, unless you live in Tasmania.

Move here. We have free health care, excellent living standards and plenty of jobs available.

Ireland, however lovely and picturesque it is also, is cold 99.9% of the year, and most of the Irish have moved HERE cos it's nicer and warmer than there, and you can swim in the ocean without freezing to death (which is always a bonus) :)

Mind you, New Zealand is also equally lovely if you don't mind constant cool/cold weather.

Canada.

Free Health Care.

We could be neighbors, I'm thinking of moving there. Vancouver is beautiful.

Spinner8: It's too painful and sad to live here. I can't take it anymore!

Squishi: You bring up some good points. Chilling at the beach is cool. But, ya'll do have sharks and that ozone problem. I don't know... ;)

J: Don't you mean, "neighbours?" ;)

At 11:49 AM, Blogger Robyn said...

But then you'd have to say "neighbours".

You can invite the neighbours over to sit in your parlour, and the children can colour with crayons.

I think my blood sugar is low.
Must eat now.
Brain work better later.

what is everyone's obsession with sharks? I've been swimming in the ocean for 30 years and no problems, my dad for 60 years. It's only the surfers who go out too far who get bites.

Don't they have sharks on US beaches? What about JAWS??

Move here. Free health care + laid back lifestyle. The only bitch is that it costs a fortune to fly anywhere for a holiday cos we're so far away.... unless you go to Bali and get a 20 year holiday in gaol. Hrm.

Sorry to join the fray so late. I've been.. unwell.

I think it makes total sense that the "liberal" judges would vote the way that they have. Whatever the democratic party once was (and let's be honest - basically what the republicans are now), they are now a very aligned with federal, as opposed to states, rights.

It would seem to follow that the rights of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Well and good if we are talking about "minority" issues (racial quotas, sexual-orientation discrimination, etc.) But we can't be surprised when the same thought-process is extended beyond any individual. I would argue that this is not (in the liberal mind-set) a thumbs-up to corporations, but a thumbs-down to the individual vs. the community. And that, ostensibly, is the democrat's platform in a nutshell.

Don't get me wrong: I generally vote liberal myself, and I am not at all pleased with the decision. But based on the actual mindset behind the decision, I can't act surprised.

Kom: You're the first person who has given me a good explanation for how this decision went through. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how or why, because I was looking at this as a rich vs. 95% of Americans issue. I can see where the court would look at it as a community issue. However, I just don't trust the government to be that altruistic. I would think the court wouldn't trust the legislature with such good intentions either- they haven't in the past, it doens't make sense why they would think this way now.

My first thought was- um- the government ALREADY has the right to take your home. Then I got the paper yesterday (this is a huge deal, really) and discovered what was really going on.

So...when hubs sent me this, I just HAD to post it here:

Bloody hell don't move to Ireland if you're afraid of the corporations buying your property... $Hell are trying to do here what they did in Nigeria, in Mayo, some farmers are trying to block them putting pipelines through their land and refineries close by... And have been put in jail, "Until they say sorry" (Seriously!)

Luckily the Irish government is only a slightly corrupt and not quite as flaithiúlach with its army as the Nigerians were...
